Cold Encouragement

I have had a cold for the past few weeks. The package of Halls cough drops that I have been sucking on has been making me feel much better. There was a little advertisement on the corner of the package that says "A Pep Talk in Every Drop". I get excited every time I have to grab for one of these! My most recent one said "Tough is your middle name". The one before that told me "Don't try harder, Do harder!". I don't know if the cough drops are actually helping, but I sure enjoy laughing at the words of encouragement I get each time I have a coughing fit! They should make some that say stuff like "Stop your whining!" or " Suck it up, you pansy."

Free Kittens and Eagles

I saw a sign along the road the other day that said "Free Kittens". I stopped to take a look, and couldn't resist! Our poor Pepper is still very sick, and I thought a kitten might motivated him to eat and move around a little more. So... Here is Tipsy.... named because of the tips of her ears and tail, and the way she is always falling off of things. Pepper just ignores her, except when she bounces on him, then he growls....

On another note, Jacob had his board of review for his Eagle Scout award last night. I was pretty nervous, but it went well. He was approved and recommended to the National organization to become an Eagle scout!!! I am overwhelmed, thinking of how far he has come. His autism causes him a lot of difficulty, but he is so strong and able to do so much! He is definitely a hero in my eyes!

Teeth and Chuckars

Last week I took Emily to the dentist for a small filling. We also had an orthodontist take a look. She ended up getting 7 baby teeth pulled! There was some screaming and crying involved. Hopefully, her permanent teeth will grow in nice and straight! They want to put partial braces on in a few weeks, then something called a herps appliance, then full braces, all for the low, low price of $4500. We haven't decided on the full deal yet!

She felt well enough that night to go to a Chuckars ball game in IF. The boys wanted to go to their church activity, so it was just Tony, Em, and I. Emily ate lots of ice cream! I don't really like to watch sports, but Tony does, so I enjoy watching people and seeing my family have fun.

Fruits of summer

Saturday was a work day... mostly on our shed. We got the metal roof on finally.. whew! It was hot work, but very satisfying once it was done! A big thunder cloud came and poured in the evening and it was so fun to watch the rain drip off the roof! We started on the first coat of paint, and will have to finish it another day.
We also picked peas, strawberries, and a zuchinni from our garden. On Monday our sprinkler system is going in and I am so very excited!!!!!! Some of our summer projects are finally coming to fruition!

So I'm back! Summer has been busy, busy, busy! A lot of it has been fun stuff. The top picture is of Tony and I working on our shed in the back yard. We are NOT builders, and it has been a fun challenge! The metal for the roof should come this week, then a bit of paint and we can scratch that project off the list!

I'm not sure what the bottom picture is... Em was playing around, and I just thought it was funny! I wonder what was going through my mind?!?
I finished another semester of school, and celebrated to finish my statistics class! That was the hardest class I have ever taken, and I have never worked so hard for a "B" in all my life!
We went to Preston yesterday for Tony's 25 year class reunion. I was bored stiff. It was fun to hang out at his sister's though and go to the parade before the rodeo!

Day of Love

Yesterday was a nice day. I'm not really big on Valentine's Day... I think we should show our love for each other every day. Still, it was fun to get and give little gifts to show appreciation. Nineteen years ago, on Valentines Day, my sweetheart gave me my engagement ring. We had actually made the decision to get married a month before, but it became official on Feb. 14th, with both our families around us, as we ate at a restaurant in Logan.

Just like me, my ring is now a little less shiny, with a few nicks and scratches. However it means much more to me now, than it did when it was sparkly and new. I love my Tony more than ever, and am happy that he is my eternal Valentine!

Feeling the Winter Blah's

January was kind of a tough month for me. The fun and sparkle of Christmas is over, the house is dirty, the days are dark and cold. I'm glad it's now February! Things are pretty much the same, but somehow it just

feels better.

Tony's dad, Delmar, passed away on January 17th. Although we knew it would happen, it was very difficult. We are very sad that we don't get to be with our Derricott grandparents again on earth. We are happy that they get to be together again though! We miss them a bunch! This is a picture of Tony and his siblings at the gravesite.

I was able to get a quilt done last month, and that always makes me happy. I even got all the kids to help me with it a bit! I've also been working on embroidering some dish towels to give as wedding gifts. It always makes me feel good to create something, even if it's something small!

School is going well. I like my classes, and look forward to finishing my Bachelor's Degree. I should finish in about 2 years, if I continue taking 2-3 classes at a time. Woooo-hoooo!!!!!

I have had several questions about why I am not blogging regularly any more. The answer is..... ? I guess I just haven't prioritized it! These days, I try to accomplish the most important things on my long, long list, and the others get put off till another day. My blog just keeps getting lower on the list! Life is busy for everyone, but mine is starting to control me, rather than the other way around. Time to take control!!!!

I started taking some classes at BYU-I, and have mixed feelings about it. It is fun to be learning in a classroom again, but it takes a lot of time away from other things. I'm getting used to doing homework again after almost 20 years of not doing it!!!

I also started working part time at the campus bookstore. I really like working there as a cashier. Luckily they only need me occasionally, when it's really busy... unfortunately when it's really busy there, I'm also busy! I got to sell a BYU_I tie to Elder Russell M. Nelson when he was here to dedicated a new building on campus. That was cool!

As always, Relief Society keeps me hopping. I LOVE the ladies I serve and those I work with. This calling is definitely a challenge to me.

I haven't cleaned the house since we had company for Christmas. The laundry has started multiplying by itself, and a healthy, home-cooked meal has been seen around here for quite some time. BUT, we all are happy, healthy, and lead very blessed lives! I can't complain!

Snowed in for Thanksgiving

We were planning on going to visit family and friends in Montana for the holiday, but due to bad roads, we decided it would not be wise. We pulled a turkey out of the freezer and did some quick cooking and came up with a fairly decent feast.

While we were snowed in, we made a snowman (snow-thing?), watched movies, strung a popcorn garland for the Christmas tree, went sledding, and made turkey-cookies. We had fun naming our cookies... road kill turkey, drumstick turkey, angry chinese turkey, etc...

We also got out the Christmas decorations and hung up the outdoor lights. We only have one tree big enough to put lights on, and it looks like a lone, Charlie Brown tree. Instead of going into the woods to cut a Christmas tree, we went to Broulims and spent $35 and bought one. I was so happy to not have to go out on the nasty roads!!!!! So, our tree is up and decorated, the stockings are hung, and we are ready to have more celebrating!

My birthdays aren't much different from any other day. I don't usually like to make a big deal of it, but at the same time, it's nice to be remembered. I've enjoyed all the e-mail and facebook comments today! Mostly, what I wanted for my big day, was to have a quiet day at home. I had to run out a few times, but it's been so nice to putter around the house! I have a sinus infection and it's great to be kind of lazy today. Tonight Tony and I are ditching the kids and going to IF for dinner and some shopping. Wooo-hoooo!!!! Then back home for pie with the kids. (cake isn't really my favorite). Maybe next year, for my 40th, I'll whoop it up a bit more. Anyway, it's good to get a little older... it sure beats the alternative!

Crash and Grass

OK... I might sound like a redneck, but.... I really like to go to demolition derby's! The crowd is usually a little "rough" for my taste, but there's something about watching cars smash into each other that is really exciting!!!! I'm a very cautious and careful driver (most of the time)... maybe that's why I like the thrill of the the chase and the big crash! Anyway... last night Tony and I watched the Batmobile take out a bunch of other cars, and we had a great time.

On a more peaceful and domestic note... I'm proud to announce that we finally have grass!!! It's not much, and you can barely see it, if you look really close, but it's finally there!! After a summer of pulling, spraying, mowing, and cursing weeds, we have a small area under control. We didn't plant all our land because we don't have a sprinkler system in yet. We have a small area in the front of the house that we can handle watering with a sprinkler and hose, and we got it planted a couple weeks ago! Grow, baby grow!!! I can't wait to get out the lawn mower!!!!!

Brains and Hearts

J and I met with the neurologist this morning to discuss the results of the tests to find what caused his seizures/convulsions. The MRI and CT scan looked really good. He had 2 EEG's done, neither of which showed any seizure activity. So, the good news is that it looks like his brain is not the problem. One EEG showed an irregular heart beat, and the neurologist thinks we should look into it. More than likely, it isn't anything to be concerned about, but there is a possibility his heart could be causing the problems. So.... it looks like more testing and doctor bills for us! I meet with J's regular doctor tomorrow to discuss what to do next. I am really thankful that he (and my other kids) are relatively healthy and we don't have to deal with this kind of stuff a whole lot!

Summer Stuff

This is my garden, as seen from the upstairs window. It froze pretty hard last night and isn't looking too good. It was a good year for beans and zucchini, but not so great for corn and tomatoes. My kids like to make fun of my circular design and call it "Mom's crop circle". Ha-ha. We had a ton of weeds, since our land has been a vacant field for many years. I'm hoping that next year I will spend a lot fewer hours pulling weeds.

Tony has cooked up hundreds of hot dogs this summer. We are on the BYU-I Alumni Council, and often help with alumni and college events. This was at an Idaho Falls Chukars baseball game. We also cooked and served at Lagoon on the 24th of July. Just yesterday we helped serve over 2250 new students and their families at a back-to-school event on campus.

OK. I've set a goal to blog once a week. I'm not great at keeping a journal, and this is going to be it... except for personal things that will get written in a "real" journal. I'm learning that I just can't keep up on everything I want to and I'm going to have to pick the most most important.
This has been a busy week. Last Sunday we had a death in the ward. I spent a lot of time that day planning the funeral meal and helping to make food assignments. Monday was spent cleaning house and doing laundry. Then I stayed up all night with Jacob because he had his EEG at 6:00 on Tuesday morning. After getting back from Jacob's test, I spent the rest of the morning getting 2 hours of sleep and preparing for the funeral that was at 2:00. The dinner was at 4:00 and I got home around 6:00. I was very tired but it was a good day. Then I worked in the garden while Tony hooked up a harrow and drove around our property. On Wednesday, the kids started school. I hosted a "back to school breakfast" for the ladies in our ward. It was quite fun! Then I had a RS presidency meeting before meeting Tony in town to exercise. Then I got groceries and barely beat the kids home. On Thursday I spent the morning cleaning, then went to Fong's for lunch with some friends. Spent the afternoon re-arranging the visiting teaching routes and delivering assignments to ladies. Friday was spent picking and canning green beans, picking apples from a few friends' trees, and doing my visiting teaching before going to work in the temple at night. Saturday morning we cleaned the church with a couple other families, and went to some yard sales and the library. Afternoon was spent cleaning, yard work, and making applesauce, along with canning more green beans. Also gave the boys and Tony haircuts. Today I went to church, took a nap, and did some reading. Whew!!!!! I'm ready to start again tomorrow!

My Mother-in-law

This has been a bitter-sweet Mother's Day. My husband and kids and friends have pampered and loved me, and that has been very sweet. On the bitter side, Tony's mom, Sharon, passed away yesterday. She had been suffering and declining after a stroke she had last year. I will miss her so very much, but I also know she is not suffering any more and is joined with her family that has already passed on. She was a kind, generous, fun person. She loved to play games and be with her kids and grandkids. She loved to shop and buy things for the people she loved. Sharon liked to knit and sew and make things for her family. She was a wonderful woman and I'm thankful that I was loved and accepted by her. I love her and miss her.

Yesterday, instead of our lunchtime exercising, Tony and I decided to give blood. I haven't done it for many years. The last time I gave, I passed out and barfed all over. I wanted to give it another try. All was going great till they finished and unhooked everything. Then everything started spinning and going black. Once again, I passed out and barfed all over.... it was horrible. The nice ladies suggested that I not give blood any more, but maybe I could help by passing out cookies or doing paper-work! Tony had to drive me home, and I've spent the last 24 hours feeling weak and dizzy. I think next time I'll volunteer to pass out the juice and cookies!

I spent a lot of time out in the yard, planting trees. It would have been really fun, except that the wind was blowing so hard! I finally had to give up because my trees kept blowing over and my wheelbarrow did too! I am so excited to get some trees started! When I picked up my fruit trees this morning, the man helping me said "you must have grown up on a farm." I thought that was a wonderful compliment!!!!

Today in RS we had a special presentation/welcome for 5 girls who are graduating from high school and will be joining us in the "old lady" class. I'm looking forward to getting to know them and what they can teach me. Our Bishop is encouraging all of the members to read and study the pamphlet, "For the Strength of Youth". Tonight I read about language and I loved this quote....

" How you speak says much about who you are. Clean and intelligent language is evidence of a bright and wholesome mind." I really believe that this is true. When I was in college, a few of us would occasionally use inappropriate language. We made a "swearing jar" and whenever we said something we shouldn't, we would have to put a quarter in the jar. We were all on very tight budgets, and this wasn't always easy!!!! Then at the end of the semester, we got pizza with the money we had collected... what a treat! Not only was the pizza wonderful, we felt good about helping each other become better people.

OK. Tony has inspired me to start blogging again. I have thought about it often, but not known where to start. It's not that I don't have the time... I have as much time as everyone else does.... I just have so many things that I want to do! My resources (time, energy, money, etc...) are far exceeded by my aspirations!!!!! I am working in being a good Mom, Wife, RS president, homemaker, relative, landscaper, cook, gardener, and on and on! I just can't do all of it at the same time! I have to work on some things now, and some things at other times.... I hope I live long enough to fit everything in!!!

We had 3rd row seats, so we got pretty splattered with spaghettiO's, cottage cheese, mustard, etc...

For Thanksgiving we stayed home. This was the first time we've ever had Thanksgiving dinner in our own home, and I got to cook everything. What a lot of work! It was really fun though, and everything turned out pretty good. We had Tony's uncle, Sheldon, and some of his family over.

On the day after Thanksgiving we headed for the woods to find a Christmas tree. We weighted the truck down with sandbags, took extra food and water, and were prepared for any winter mishap. Luckily everything went great and we found a nice 12 foot tree. The kids cut it down by themselves and we all had a great time!

This is Jacob getting his EEG done on Monday morning. He had to stay up all night, so he would fall asleep during the test. He had a seizure last Sunday, so we are trying to figure out what caused it. His CT scan and bloodwork were normal. We don't think it will be serious, but we have to rule out the big stuff like tumors and epilepsy. I can't wait to get the results so I can stop worrying!

Settling In

Life is finally slowing down, and I feel like a human being again! We moved into our new house about 4 weeks aago. It was very fun, but hard too. We lived without a refrigerator, washer, or dryer for 10 days, till ours arrived. During that time we had company twice. Tony's Mom had a stroke, and that has been hard on everyone. We are not able to visit her as often as we'd like. My Grandpa has been having serious heart trouble, but had surgery yesterday and things are looking up. We've all been sick with nasty colds. School started, and with all the kids in different schools, it's been hard to keep up!

Yesterday the kids all participated in a 1-mile fun run. It was a beautiful morning! Emily ran most of the way, but due to colds and un-fitness, the boys walked most of it.

We were so surprised at the end when Erik was announced as the first place winner in his division!!!! He got a medal and is so very proud of it!!! After the race, there was a drawing. Jacob won a football. At the end, the grand prizes were two new bikes. We couldn't believe it when Erik was called as the winner of one of them!!! It was so funny because it was about 2 feet high with training wheels!!!!

Erik was so sweet about it! He took it to Walmart and exchanged it for a girls bike for Emily, since she has outgrown hers, and he got a new bike last Christmas. Sometimes my kids amaze me!

We just found out a few hours ago that the negotiations on our new house are over.... we are getting it!!!! I'm so excited I could cry!!!!! It is a beautiful, brand new home. It is the only one I REALLY liked after touring at least 30 different homes. Now I have to get all the mortgage work done, and hopefully we'll be closing and moving in before the end of August. One of my favorite things about it, is that we can see the temple and the Teton mountains from the family room. The boys haven't been inside, but Emily has. She has picked out her room because it has a window seat, and she can see the temple from her window. I will have almost 1-1/2 acres of land to landscape..... any ideas?!!!?

Fast and Furious

Things are finally moving along! Yay!! After waiting for 6 months for our house to sell, we finally got an offer. The time between the offer and the closing date was less than 2 weeks! I am going to Montana on Monday to sign the closing papers and do some painting (as part of the agreement). (I'll be in Hamilton from the 6th till at least the 9th, and would love to see friends... hint.. hint... :) I'm so excited! I spent the afternoon yesterday looking at houses here, and still haven't found the right one for us... but, I'm sure it will work out!!

This summer is flying by with the kids involved in all sorts of activities. We've been meeting our cousins every week for a fun activity. We've gone to the zoo, the temple visitors center, and several museums. We made ice cream, painted wood models, make alka-seltzer rockets, and had picnics.... lots of fun!

Tony's parents were here last weekend and we went out and spent 5 hours stuck in a mud hole. The sheriff had to track us by our cell phone signal, then come pull us out. It was scary and not so fun, but we made the best of it and are glad to be home safely!

We had a ward activity where they had a climbing wall... Em was the only one of our family brave enough to reach the very top!

We got to spend a Saturday morning at the air show, watching the cool planes! It was so exciting to see them dive and spin... made me want to be flying with them!!

So... that's we've done with our summer so far! I'll keep posting about all our fun adventures!!!

Stuff in our lives

I've been a terrible blogger lately!! I spend all my time in "survival mode" these days, and blogging is not a priority!

Emily got to be the star of her class play. Here she is as "Captain Comma". It was a great play! Em liked her part and was a great pirate captain!

School has been out for a week now, and we are having fun with summer classes. Jacob is taking an art class, Erik is in golf, Em is doing tennis, and I am stiff and sore from pilates! It's a good thing we have a reading program at the library and a movie program at the theater too, to keep us busy. We are having a hard time with no yard to mow and water and no garden to weed. I planted a couple tomatoes in pots, and the wind immediately whipped them to pieces!

We are enjoying all the activities available on campus. One of the kids favorite places is the "rock and mineral" display in the geology department. This shows the kids enjoying the crystals, and wishing they were rich enough to buy them!

We are getting very anxious to sell our house in Montana so we can buy a house here. We recently got a notice that all pets MUST be on a leash outside. Our cat is not happy. He yowls all night to be let out, and none of us enjoy listening to him. When we do put a leash on him, he fights it and we also look really silly! It's hard to keep 3 kids and a cat quiet and busy in this small apartment, and I won't be very sad to leave it!

Em's Field Day

Today I had the fun experience of helping with the Lincoln Elementary Field Day. The theme was "boot camp". After a last-minute trip to DI for some camouflage pants, we were ready for the day. The kids had 10 stations to go to. My job was basically the "pack horse". I carried around various jackets, backpacks, water bottles, lunches, hats, scarves, etc.... and tried to keep up with the kids. Occasionally I applied sunscreen or escorted kids to the "latrines". It was nice to spend the day outside and get to know some of Emily's new friends.

Working in Montana

I made a very quick, spur of the moment trip back to Hamilton to do some work on our house. We've been praying and praying that it will sell soon. Tony and I decided that in order for us to try and hurry things along, a few jobs needed to be done. Thanks to the help of my parents, I got a lot done in a short time. My parents scraped the old paint off the inside front porch, and the outside back steps before I got there. Then, we scraped a bit more, primed, caulked, and started painting on Tuesday night. On Wednesday we got up early and did the rest of the painting. After a quick lunch at Perkins, we ran to Missoula for some vinyl tile. Then hurried back and spent the rest of the afternoon and evening laying it down. I think it looks 100% better than it used to. I just hope the time and money will be worth it, and that someone will buy my house soon!!!!!! It was a fun couple days...... THANKS MOM & DAD!!!!!

Current Events

We've been fighting with Emily for the past months about the scraggly state of her hair. It was a battle every morning to get it combed, and she would never wear a pony tail or anything to help keep it neat. She finally made the decision to get it cut, so I immediately called the beauty college and made an appointment. We had about 8-10 inches cut off, and she looks cute with her new bob. The girl that cut her hair was really excited when Emily said that she could keep her hair and use it for a "coloring" experiment.

Last weekend we worked on the boys' hiking merit badge. They have to do 5 ten-mile hikes, and one 20-mile hike! This was their 3rd 10-miler. We started at our apartment, and did a "exploring Rexburg" tour. Emily got tired after about 4 miles, so she and I walked about another mile back to our home while the guys kept hiking. The weather was beautiful and we all had a good time. Erik got a giant blister on the bottom of one foot, but other than a few other small blisters, that was the only mishap on the trip.

My sister invited us over for Easter dinner. We had a delicious meal, then a big egg hunt for the kids. To make it fair, the kids all divided up the eggs so that they each got the same amount... they are such good kids!!! Then we played a fun word game we made up using Scrabble tiles. I especially enjoyed it because I won!!!

Conference Weekend

We had the opportunity to go to Salt Lake for General Conference. Tony was in a choir that sang during the Priesthood session on Saturday night. My Mom and Dad came down for the weekend, and Dad was able to take my boys (and my brother) to the Priesthood session. It sounded like they had a good time! Meanwhile the ladies went shopping at the big IKEA store, and went out for dinner. On Sunday morning, I got to go to conference with my parents and my sister-in-law. It was a wonderful experience!!! My brother was good enough to let us all stay at his home, and we had a good time visiting with his family also. It was a good weekend!

It was pretty good, but I'm not a big fan of corned beef.

Well, my baby is now 9 years old. She didn't have a big party... only the family.... but it was fun. We took "broken glass jello" to her school for a treat, ate dinner at McDonalds, and went bowling.

She wanted a Webkinz cake. My decorating tools are stored in a box in a storage unit, so I was limited to using a butter knife, toothpicks, and a ziplock bag. We came up with a "Wheel of Wow" cake, that she liked.

Presidents Day Fun

On Monday, everyone had the day off, so we went to explore. This is one of the many beautiful views we saw. We drove on the back farm roads, and just poked around. At one point, a big truck came zooming up behind us, so we scooted over to let them past. We got into the mushy snow, and it pulled us off the road into a snowbank. Then we had to wave the fast truck down, to turn around and come pull us out. We both laughed at how we slowed him down, by trying to let him speed up. We also drove to the Teton dam site, and went to the Teton Flood Museum.

We're getting all settled down, living among the Mormons. It is quite a cultural change. Even at school, they call each other "Brother and Sister"! The kids are enjoying school and making new friends. Tony enjoys going to work and getting to know everyone. I spend my time cleaning the mold in my apartment, and doing all the wifely/motherly things I always do. We went ice skating last night for FHE. Em was a whiz, zipping all over the place, Tony did quite well too. The boys and I hobbled around the edges, feeling proud of ourselves when we could stop without running into anyone. New Address

We finally got to move into our apartment! As grateful as I am to family who let us stay with them, it's so nice to be in my own place. Such as it is. I am thankful that it is only temporary, until our house sells, and we buy a new one! Em had a good day at school yesterday, and is excited to have so many LDS kids in her class. The boys started school this morning, and I cried. They were fine and had the help that they needed, but it was really hard for this emotional mom. This morning I am sitting at the laundry-mat, keeping an eye on our clothing. I will be really grateful to have my own washer and dryer again! This whole experience is making me thankful a lot of things that I generally take for granted!! Our new address is: 520 Yale Ave, #101, Rexburg, ID 83440.

Blogging has not been a priority lately. Everything I own... except the contents of a suitcase, has been packed up and put in storage. We are staying with some very, very kind relatives in Idaho, while we wait to get into our apartment. Today it is about 20 degrees below zero. I am feeling rather displaced and out of my element, but look forward to getting settled. I was supposed to have a meeting with Jacob's new school this morning, to help him adjust to his new school, and get his IEP in place. No one was at the school, because of the cold everything was cancelled. I am a little disappointed, but am trying to reschedule. Right now I'm looking forward to having my own home and a little sunshine!!! I'm sure tomorrow will be better.

Lovely Luncheon

Yesterday I attended the nicest luncheon! My dear friend, Annemarie, set up a "moving away" lunch for me. Her husband and sons had set up tables and chairs at the church, and she invited friends, organized the food, and was a beautiful hostess. I was so touched by all her hard work, and by all the ladies that came. There were probably 25-30 people there! This has been a wonderful place to live, and I'm going to miss my friends and "church family" so very much! Thank you all for your wonderfulness! Luckily I will be able to visit often, and hopefully you will stop and visit us when you are in Rexburg! I love you all!!!!!

This new year will bring about a lot of changes for our family. Tony started his new job at BYU-Idaho yesterday, and so far he loves it. The kids and I are still in Hamilton, finishing out the quarter at school, and trying to sell the house. Everywhere I look, I think "this is the last time I'll do ____________". But, I also think "It will be fun/exciting to do __________ after we move". I apologize to everyone about being an emotional wreck. Change has never been easy for me. I didn't get a family picture taken, send out Christmas cards, or make pretty cookies. I burned the caramels I was making this morning. My house is a mess, and I'm keeping my kids entertained in front of the tv. My Christmas tree is all dried out, and the popcorn garland is crumbling. Yet, despite it all, I'm feeling very merry! I have presents to give to the people I love (and they're even wrapped!). I am surrounded by good friends and family. I am warm and well fed. The snow is beautiful. Best of all, I get to celebrate the birth of a baby, who has made my life worth living. Merry Christmas everyone!!!!!

BYU-Idaho or Bust

Two weeks ago, I was very content, living my busy little life in the Bitterroot. On the Wed. before Thanksgiving, we got a call from BYU-I, wanting to interview Tony for a job. Since we were heading down that way to eat turkey, we thought... "why not?" So, last Monday Tony was in interviews all day while the kids and I shopped and checked out the town. Then, yesterday, the school called again and offered us the job! Tony told them we'd think about it. The last I heard this morning was that we were thinking about it, and probably shouldn't say anything to anyone till we made a choice. ( I knew that we were going to do it.) Then, Tony sent me an e-mail saying that the 22nd would be his last day working for the bank! He proceded to send a note to the several thousand people in his mailbox, saying that we are moving!

I have such mixed feelings!!! I'm excited about this new opportunity for Tony, and the benefits it will provide to our family. I'm really struggling with leaving the town I grew up in, and all the people I love here. The hardest part will be moving away from my parents. I'm worried about the challenges a move will make for my kids... especially Jacob. I'm excited about the new possibilities that lie ahead for the kids.

I apologize if anyone feels like we have been "sneaky" or anything... but we really didn't know anything until today. Now we need to concentrate on sorting and packing and selling our house. I also apologize for being emotional... I just can't help it!!!! Everything makes me cry, even happy things!!!!! I'm just a mess!!!

Time for the Tree

Our family has a fun tradition of going up in the woods on the day after Thanksgiving, and cutting down our Christmas tree. Usually there are sleds and hot cocoa involved. Due to a number of circumstances, we did not have this fun (?) experience this year. Emily and I went down to Albertsons and shoved a tree into the back of the van and hauled it home. A few days ago, we put the lights on it, but didn't have time for any decorations. Finally, this afternoon we were all home, and we put the ornaments on. This is one of my favorite parts of Christmas. Every year, since we have been married, each family member gets a "special" ornament for the tree. It usually represents something that they accomplished, learned, or experienced. I love to get out these ornaments and remember the times that each one represents. I'm having a hard time coming up with ornaments for this year, though. It seems that we are so busy just getting from day to day, that we haven't been taking time for the "good stuff". Or, maybe I just need to find more "good stuff" in the everyday experiences.

This has been a busy week for me. As the Compassionate Service person in our ward, I have had two funeral luncheons to put together. Not only have I never done this before, one of the funerals will be a very large one, with most of the stake involved. I loved both of the ladies that passed away, and want to do my best for them. The first, and smaller funeral was yesterday. Thanks to the wonderful help of friends and ward members, I think it went well. The food was all cooked and delivered on time (mostly), we didn't run out of anything, and the family seemed to be very grateful. WHEW!!!!! Now that this first one is over, I feel like we can handle the second one. I will spend today getting ready for tomorrows big one. I need to deliver some hams to be baked, get tablecloths and dishes ready, set up the Primary room for overflow, fill salt and pepper shakers, and draw up some assignment lists for the people helping tomorrow. I am so thankful to everyone who signed up to bring food and to help cook, serve, and clean up!!!!! I am glad to help and serve, but I will be VERY glad tomorrow night, when I can relax!!!

Birthdays

Well, I just turned another year older. I have mixed emotions about my birthdays. I really like getting presents and having everyone treat me special.... but on the other hand, I feel like I have to be worthy of the special treatment, and I start to see all the areas I need to work on.
I got two gifts this year that I am really excited about. One is a membership to the health club, and the other is a circular saw. I really have a hard time getting out and exercising in the cold, dark winter, so the club should be nice. Maybe by my next birthday I'll be a lean, mean, exercising machine!!!! (Don't hold your breath) I am always borrowing my parents power tools to fix things and build things... so I'm thrilled to get my own circular saw (and Dad will be happy to get his back! :) ) I know most gals wouldn't be too excited about getting tools for their birthdays, but it really made me happy!!! Thanks everyone for the presents, cards and phone calls!!!

Forgotten Garnishes

My good friend asked me to help with a dinner last Saturday night. We had a good time planning the menu, oriental theme, decorations, etc... I spent several hours making these lovely garnishes out of green onions and mini-peppers. Unfortunately, I forgot them at home, in the fridge, until we started preparing the food! By then it was too late to drive back, so we served an "ungarnished" dinner, and my family had a beautiful meal on Sunday!!!

A Little Organization

Lately my home has fallen apart. Everywhere I look there are piles of things to be finished, sorted, delivered, put away, or thrown away. Today I attacked a small corner and got my fabric sorted and folded. I got rid of 3 boxes of fabric that I know I will never use! Now I only have 99% more of the house to go through!!!

Last Week of October

Emily was a bride for Halloween. My boys decided that they were too big to dress up and go door to door. They did make the rounds at the ward trunk-or-treat though.

This has been a busy, strange, and somewhat disturbing week. I had a great many commitments and appointments. There were a lot of fun activities and Halloween celebrations. There were also more than the usual "not fun" things. My grandpa had a small heart attack. (He's home and doing well.) A friend passed away after a painful fight with cancer. I found that a wonderful cousin has been dealing with some abuse and marital problems. My friend's 2-year old had a fever-induced seizure that badly scared us.

All these experiences have made me think about my own life and what's important to me. I'm so grateful for the many, many blessings I enjoy each day!!! At the same time, I feel a "helplessness" about all the pain and suffering in the world. What can I do, as one small person, to make things better? I can only do so much, then I run out of time, energy, and/or money. I know that there's not one "answer" to all this, but it's just something that is on my mind!

Activity Days

Today the activity days girls came to my house to play in the leaves and do some service for me! It was a lot of fun! First they raked the leaves into a huge pile and each girl got to do their very best jump and get judged on it. Then they looked for small toys and candy that were hidden in the leaves. Next was a contest to see how fast each team could fill a bag with leaves. After that, they all worked hard, filling several bags each, before eating their treats. I was so grateful for the work they did! They filled around 20 bags, which would have taken me many hours! They had fun, and made a big dent in the amount of raking that I need to do!

OK, Miss Melodee... Here is my 4th photo from my 4th folder in my pictures. It just happened to be a picture of me! I think I was 9 years old, and I am modeling the very stylish dress that my mom made for me for Christmas. I was a little jealous because my sister got a dress too, (in the same pattern) but hers was a shiny fabric, and mine wasn't!! I have tons of unorganized photos! One of my many winter projects is to put all the pictures in files according to date. It will be a very big project!!!

Stuff

Today I have been doing "stuff". For the first day this week, I haven't had a headache, and I feel like getting everything done that I have been putting off. My kids are home because of Fall Break, so I have been sticking close to home. Here are a few things that I've gotten done (finally!);

sweep and vacuum the floors
several loads of laundry
cleaned out my "in box"
paid some bills
sorted some church papers
mowed the lawn (hopefully for the last time this year)
cleaned out the dead flowers from my planters and beds
made chocolate chip cookies
went to the hardware store for light bulbs, and replaced a few burnt out ones
moved all our bikes onto the patio for the winter
took out trash
finished reading Brisingr
cleaned off my bulletin board
re-potted a plant
ironed all my wrinkly shirts
dusted Tony's computer desk

I still have a few hours to do more... I can't wait to see what other "stuff" I can get done!

Good Idea!

My lovely friend, Tara S. had a great idea! She suggested that we post the Relief Society activities on a blog, so those in Primary and YW could be more aware of what is going on. Apples and Such

I've been busy painting this week, so nothing else is getting done. In a few weeks I am going to help with a little class where we are teaching some ladies how to can apple pie filling. Here is my mom's recipe. I just printed it up, so I thought I might as well post it for the rest of you who are trying to preserve apples. For anyone who wants to come to the class, it will be on the 21'st, at 6:30pm, at the LDS church. Enjoy!

Canned Apple Pie Filling - Karren McLean

Fill 7 quart jars with peeled, sliced apples. (To prevent browning, I place apples in a large bowl with cold water and lemon juice, as I peel.)
In a large kettle, bring 9 cups of water and 3-1/2 cups sugar to a boil
In a large bowl, mix together the following:

1 c. sugar
1 c. cornstarch
½ tsp. nutmeg
2 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp. cloves
1 tsp. almond extract
1 c. cold water
1 tsp. salt
3 Tbsp. lemon juice

Stir sugar mixture(#3) into hot liquid(#2).
Cook until it turns clear.
Pour hot liquid over the apples in the jars. Leave about ½ in. at the top.
Wipe jar rims clean.
Place lids and rings on jars.
Place jars in a boiling water bath.
Process for 25 minutes.

One jar of pie filling can be poured into an UNBAKED pie shell. Then I either put another crust on top, or use a crumb topping. Bake uncovered at 350* until the crust turns a nice brown color. (about 25 min.)

You can pour one jar of pie filling into a greased, 9in. square pan, and top with your favorite apple crisp topping. Then bake at 350 for about 15-20 min.

We also like this topping heated in a pan on the stove, and poured over hot pancakes or waffles. It also makes a yummy ice cream topping.

Jacob's birthday

This is what I was doing 15 years ago!!! Jacob and I almost didn't make it through his birth... it was not pleasant, but he made up for it!! Jacob weighed 9lb. 7oz, and he looked like a little papoose. I was in love!

Jacob is now a wonderful teenager! He is so smart and funny. He has autism, but that is not who HE is. Jacob teaches me new things all the time and he has a kind and tender soul. I am so grateful for him and am grateful he is my boy. Happy Birthday, Big J!!!!

A New Calling

I have been a Primary teacher for a few years. Today I got a new calling that I am both excited about, and terrified of! As a Primary teacher, it was fairly predictable... I knew who I would be dealing with each week, how rowdy each child could get, and had sort of figured out how to calm each one down. I loved the hugs and crayon pictures and "I love you, teacher"s. I will miss it terribly.

Now I am the Compassionate Service Leader. I don't even really know what is expected in this calling, except I will be helping with funerals and new babies! I will be able to serve with lives leaving this world, coming into this world, and those somewhere in between. I am really excited to have this chance to be more involved in service, and know it will help me to be a better person. I'm really scared that I will not know what to do and say. Hopefully people will be forgiving with me as I try to do this. Our former Compassionate Service lady was so kind and wonderful... I know that I can't fill her shoes, but I hope mine can at least follow in her footsteps!

Summer's Final Fruits

With autumn sneaking in the door, I had to take a few pictures of my summer friends. I have to admit that the yard work is getting tedious, and I am looking forward to putting away the lawnmower. But I know that in a few months I'll be sick of cold and snow, so I try to keep my plants from freezing, as long as possible.

I love this Dahlia... the pinks and yellows blend in such a beautiful way. This plant was a splurge last spring, and I have to say it was well worth it!

My pumpkin plants did especially well this year, and I have 5 large pumpkins turning orange! One for each of us to carve for Halloween. They choked out my cucumbers and zuchini, but they are fine looking pumpkins!!

This is one of 8 giant sunflowers that the kids and I planted. They are about 10-12 feet tall, and the heads are between 12-20 inches across! We are excited to try drying and eating some of the seeds. I think we'll leave most of them out for the birds and squirrels to eat during the winter. It's just so much easier to go to the store and buy a nice, packaged bag of sunflower seeds... but... we do have to try doing it ourselves... just for the fun of it!!

I Love To See The Temple

I had a lovely time riding to Spokane and going to the temple yesterday. Every year a bunch of ladies in our ward take a Saturday, leave the kids and husbands at home, and drive 4 hours to Spokane. It is really fun to have a "girls day". We talk and laugh, shop and eat. The best part is going to the temple together. I am so grateful for the friendships I have in these women. Each year I think of dozens of excuses why I'm too busy to go, but each time I have a great experience and am glad that I went!

I'm Becoming a Geek

That's right... Geek. First I started a blog... now I've created an account on FaceBook! I'm not even sure why...I just wanted to see what all the excitement was about, and before I knew it... I had set up my profile and started searching for "friends"! As I spent my time looking for everyone I've ever known, I realized that a lot of people go in and out of our lives. Some of them I want to keep in touch with - but our lives take so many twists and turns that we just can't keep in touch with everyone. It is kind of sad that there are also people that I really don't want to spend the time and effort to contact. Is this their fault because they are big jerks, or is it my fault because I'm a big jerk? This is something I will have to ponder.

Journey of a Different Kind

This morning I took another journey... down memory lane. A few weeks ago, I got a box of papers from CDC (Child Development Center), containing 8 years of paperwork on Jacob. They were cleaning out their files, and getting rid of old papers.

I started browsing through the pile, and quickly noticed that the newest papers were on top, with the oldest on the bottom. I turned the pile (about 8 in. tall) over, and started at the beginning. They began when Jacob was 2 years and 8 months old. The records showed our first phone call and visit to the CDC, because we were worried about our son. Then came all the tests: physical, emotional, developmental, psychological, and on and on. Next was the confirmation that our Jacob had "PDD-NOD" (Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Diagnosed). What the heck is that?!?! - we thought. Next was more stuff telling us that this was just a "nice" way of saying HE HAS AUTISM!!!!!

A few years later, our son, Erik, was also diagnosed with very mild autism.

As I read through this stuff, it brought back a lot of old memories... not all of them pleasant. But, I was happy to find that a lot of the pain and fear is not inside me any more. This "journey" through autism has been a real challenge for our family and for myself personally. It still is at times, but, thanks to my knowledge of the gospel, I have peace. I know it will be OK.

As I continued to read, there were hundreds of pages of various notes from therapists, aides, teachers, doctors, etc... Every visit was documented, and I was reminded of so many struggles our boys have had, and how they have been strong and overcome so much. I am so thankful to everyone who has provided help and support!

Austism will always be a part of our lives... it will continue to be a journey... I still have a lot of hopes and fears that only time can show me. I have my husband, my family, my friends, and most importantly, my Heavenly Father, who will travel along with me... I'm looking forward to the trip!!!

It'll cost how much?!?!

The kids have started school, and since our district has such lousy funding, everything costs. I just wrote out a check for $100 for Jacob's "fees" to attend school, and both of the other kids informed me that their lunch accounts need a boost. Lunches cost $2.50 each... X three kids = $7.50/day = $150/month... just for lunch! Erik told me that he has to pay a "locker fee" and "planner/ID card fee" by tomorrow. Both the boys have to have extra shoes for gym, that must stay at the school, and in Emily's class, they are having the parents each "donate" a month's worth of snacks. I thought our taxes were supposed to cover this!! We also have a vacation's worth of credit card charges to pay off, and Jacob broke a tooth eating dinner tonite!! I try very hard to plan a budget and stick to it... but, all the "unplanned" expenses keep throwing me off. I need to plan more for the unplanned!!! Why can't the world revolve around my plans and expectations?

Well, we had a great trip down the Oregon Coast. Here are a few photos.

We are heading to the coast for one last fling before school starts. Our kids have been in 42 states, but that doesn't include Oregon!!! It is practically next door. We plan on cruising down Highway 101, possibly all the way down to San Fransisco. We are taking our tent and sleeping bags so if the weather is nice we can camp on the beach!! This will be a slow, relaxing trip, and I am really looking forward to it!!

I REALLY Hate Spiders

What's with the spiders lately? I killed two really big ones today. For some reason, hobo spiders really love the stairs down to my basement. I go up and down the stairs dozens of times a day, and it would probably be hilarious for anyone watching me. I keep my broom near the top of the stairs, and my can of "Raid" at the bottom. First I open the door and do a swift glance around. If I see nothing, I peer over the rail to scan the lower portion. If I see anything, I grab for whatever killing agent is nearest and apply it with enthusiasm! If the coast looks clear, I quickly scamper down, being careful to keep my feet on the front edges of the step, because sometime the little buggers hide on the vertical parts that I can't see. At the bottom, I swiftly turn around and check the front of the steps. If I see any creepy-crawlies, they are promptly hosed down with spray, or smashed into atoms with my broom. Then I have to leap over the remains, not touching the step, to get back upstairs. It's a carefully calculated process, that only a true arachnaphobic would understand. To the rest of the world... I'm sure you have your goofy routines also!!!

Magic Beans

These are magic beans... the "magic thing about them is that my kids like them!!! They like the purple ones best of all, because they turn green as they cook. Pretty fun, huh? I don't really grow enough beans to can them, but I do freeze a few quarts every year to enjoy during the winter. Fresh beans in January is pretty "magical" too!!!

I had a great weekend at BYU-Idaho. Tony, Jacob, and I spent 3 days at Education Week. I love being in Rexburg... it brings back a lot of fun memories from my college days. This was Jacob's first year, and I don't think he was really impressed. He did love Marvin Goldstein's (pianist) classes. I love the chance to learn and be spiritually fed!!!

Tony and I are also BYU-Idaho Alumni Ambassadors for our area. In conjunction with Ed. Week, we had an Amassador Conference, which was very informative! We enjoyed one luncheon where we sat with and visited Henry J. Eyring. Now I know more about what my role as an ambassador should be, and I'm excited about it!!

We also swung down to Tony's hometown for "That Famous Preston Night Rodeo". It was fun, but the seating was too crowded. I highly recommend seeing the rodeo! We picked up Em and Erik from their Aunt Shara Kay. She has been wonderful and taken care of them for the past several years while we go to Education Week. I am so grateful for my husbands family and for all they do for us! Where would we be without our families!?!

More about Huckleberries

This morning I went up Lost Horse Canyon with my parents and kids. We were on a mission to pick more huckleberries. The thing is, you can only pick them in a few areas, and for a few weeks out of the year. If you miss them, you don't get another chance! I think a lot of things in life are like that... If you don't take your opportunities, they will be gone. It's so important to find the good things that are happening right now... the quiet moments, kind words, smiles, flowers, a puppy, and on and on. We miss so much if we spend all of our time looking for "huckleberries" in the middle of January, instead of enjoying the snowflakes!

Berry Delicious

This is the time of year for picking raspberries. I think they are so beautiful! There's nothing like going out first thing in the morning, before it gets hot, and listening to the world wake up while picking raspberries. For me, this is a very soul-soothing experience. I also love to to munch the cool, sweet berries before my breakfast!!

Yesterday I went "huckleberrying" with my mom and Emily. We didn't find a lot... but here they are. They will be just enough to throw into a batch of pancakes or muffins. I don't know what it is about Montanans and their huckleberries, but I don't feel like the summer is complete without their tart, wild taste.

I Am Vanilla

I actually don't really like ice cream (unless it's home-made) so I wasn't surprised to find out that I am compared to plain old vanilla. I actually liked the description though... most of it seemed to fit me.

Pizza Hut At Home

This morning we went to the Logger Days parade in Darby. What fun!!! There were lots of 4-wheelers and logging trucks. The streets were literally littered with candy, so the kids thought it was great. As we walked around town, (in Darby it doesn't take long) we stopped at a yard sale and saw these benches. They were asking $10 each for them. I practiced my bargaining skills, and got the pair for $15. They were removed from Pizza Hut a few years ago, during a remodel. I wasn't sure I liked them, but they seem to fit, and they are growing on me. If I decide not to keep them, I'll bequeath them to my little brother, who worked at Pizza Hut for many years. Meanwhile, the kids think they are pretty cool!

Shelves and Peas

What do shelves and peas have in common, you may ask? .... not much, except that's what I've been working on today. I spent about 3 hours this morning building the first of many shelves that will help me organize my basement. They aren't really pretty, but they are strong. I am rather proud of myself, since this is the first time I've tried anything like this!

Then I picked the peas, and had the kids help me shell them. I think more peas went into our mouths than into the freezer, but that's what growing a garden is all about.

National Peach Ice Cream Day

Yes, in case you were wondering.... today IS National Peach Ice Cream Day. (Who comes up with these?) Our family celebrates everything we can, so... today I made peach ice cream for the first time. It was delicious!!! I highly recommend it.

Peach Ice Cream
1 Pint Heavy Cream
1-1/2 Cup Sugar
2 Eggs
1 tsp. Vanilla
Dash of Salt
3-4 Ripe Peaches
About 3 Cups Milk

Whip cream until very thick. Pour it into your ice-cream canister. Beat eggs and add to cream. Slowly add sugar and half the milk. Stir till sugar dissolves. Add the vanilla and salt. Peel and de-pit the peaches. Puree the peaches, along with the other half of the milk, in a blender. Pour the peach puree into the ice-cream canister and mix well. The canister should be about 3/4 full. If it is not, add milk till it is 3/4 full. Freeze according to your freezers directions. ( You can cut the peaches into chunks, instead of pureeing them, but my kids won't eat "chunks" in their ice-cream.)

Time at Home

Yesterday I was able to spend some time in my garden. This is what I picked. It is so satisfying to eat things that I've grown myself... and the kids are more likely to eat veggies when they helped to grow and harvest them. We had a delicious dinner!

I made these pillow-cases this morning for a couple travel pillows. My boys needed small pillows to take to camp with them, and they will come in handy in the van. I used some scraps of fabric from my stash... Dark colors so they won't show as much dirt!! The boys probably won't be crazy about the flowers, but I like them!

A Week at Girls Camp

I had the opportunity to spend the last week as our ward girls camp leader. We went to Camp Paxson, on Seeley Lake. The weather was beautiful, the girls were great, and the mosquitos nearly sucked us dry. I really love going to girls camp because it reminds me of when I gained my testimony, through camp experiences. I want to make camp as fun and memorable for others as it was for me.This is me, my assistant, and my 11 girls, by a big cow, on the way to camp.

My fake snake-bite... You'd be surprised how many kids wanted to cut little slits and suck out the venom!

My assistant and I snuck away from the girls for an illegal, mid-afternoon smore's break. It was delicious!

This is our lovely cabin... where 10 of us tried to sleep. The snoring, talking in their sleep, and late night trips to the potty made it hard. I think we averaged around 4-5 hours of sleep a night.... but, boy did we have fun!!!! Can't wait to go back next year!!!!!

4th of July Fun

On Saturday, we took a beautiful drive to Painted Rocks Reservoir. This is looking down from the dam... made me dizzy!!

This is the Alta Tree... supposedly the oldest pine tree in the Bitterroot. It was fully mature when Columbus discovered America, and was killed by lightening in 1993.

Our picnic lunch at Lost Horse Hot Springs... Everyone decided to cough as I snapped the picture! (Ha-ha you guys!) We also celebrated Tony's 40th birthday... notice the cake in the front.

We drove the dirt road from the West Fork to Shoup, Idaho. The flowers were amazing, and we felt like we were on the top of the world!!

We ended the day with a good ol' smashin', bashin' demolition derby in Salmon, Idaho. It was a fun day, filled with many types of adventures!

Flower Power

I just finished putting Emily's room back together. Whew!!!! I could have done the job in half the time, and with a lot less frustration, if she hadn't been "helping" me so much. I tried really hard to make it a fun project for her, and swallow my "perfectionism". She seems happy with the results, so hopefully it was the worth the time and effort. Now the boys want me to paint glow-in-the-dark stars on their walls!! That will have to wait till after Girls Camp.

Em's room gets a makeover

It's been over a year since our house remodel. I've been promising Emily that we can paint her room, since before she got her own room. Today I finally got started on it! She chose a pretty yellow color for the walls, then I think we'll paint green and pink flowers or polka dots. We'll see. I should be working on Girls Camp stuff. We leave next Tuesday, and I need to start gathering things up. Maybe tomorrow will be a camp day.

The Boys are Back in Town

Jacob and Erik made it back, safe and sound, from scout camp. Neither one had showered all week, so we made them get clean before even telling us about it. Jacob earned 4 merit badges, and Erik earned 5! It's hard to get a lot of information from them, but it sounded like they had a good time. I am glad to have my family all in one place again!

Ducks, Fish and a Muskrat

This is a terrible picture, but you get the idea. Emily and I went to our local duck pond for a picnic lunch. We always have fun feeding the ducks and fish. Today a little muskrat joined the party! It was the size of a small cat, with a long, bald tail.... disgusting, but interesting!!

Today we also went the the play "The Pirates of Penzance". It was very well done, and the pirate king in "Heelies" was hilarious! Em and I would both like to be in a local play sometime.

Missing My Boys

On Sunday, my boys left for Camp Grizzley, a boy scout camp near Moscow, Idaho. I was looking forward to a lazy, quiet week. I didn't realize how much I would miss them!! The house is way too quiet and there is too much food in the fridge! I planned on getting all kinds of projects done, but Emily is bored and wants my constant attention. I am having fun spending time with her, but I'm not getting ahead on anything!! I hope the boys are having fun and learning lots, but I'm really looking forward to seeing them Saturday afternoon!

Lost Horse Overlook

The Bitterroot Valley is a beautiful place. We are so blessed to live here!! We spent Saturday morning having a yard sale. By the time we deducted the newspaper ad, pizza for lunch, and a day's worth of work, we made about $4. From now on I will just donate my old stuff to anyone who can use it!! It will be a lot easier!!

After our long, hot morning, we escaped to the mountains for a "weenie roast". The Lost Horse Overlook is one of the most spectacular spots I know. A few clouds came in, and we enjoyed listening to the thunder roll around the mountain peaks.

More quilt blocks

Yeah!!! I finally got caught up with the Star quilt-a-long!!! Here are blocks #5,6,7, and 8. I got a new foot for my sewing maching that guides the fabric to make a perfect 1/4 inch seam. I love it, except I have to trim off all my little triangle "ears" or it messes up. I also bought a walking foot and a darning foot. This may be the first quilt that I try to "machine quilt". I'll have to practice a lot before I get brave enough to work on a full size quilt!!!

Spiderman Cake

I thought I made a pretty cool Spider-man cake for Erik's birthday. I was informed that it was "pretty good", but the eyes should have been white, outlined with black. Oh well!! I want to get caught up with the star quilt-a-long, but I keep having to create holiday celebrations. After our Primary water activity this afternoon, then a Girls Camp first-aid/camp cooking event tonight, I might be able to sew a little.

It's been 13 years since this picture was taken!! Erik still has the same dark hair and sparkley eyes. He has a goofy sense of humor. His favorite things include: video games, reading, watching movies, and eating. He is a bottomless pit when it comes to food!!! Erik has had more emergency room visits than the other two kids together. Hopefully he'll be as wonderful in his teenage years as he has been in the previous ones! We love you Erik!!!

Here's to Dad

My dad got me roses when we went to a Daddy-Daughter party together. Through my entire life he has been my friend and teacher. He taught me how to drive, how to catch a fish, how to work, and how to have fun. He is a Disney fan, and we had some great trips, sleeping in our van, on the way to Disneyland. I am thankful for all the skills and memories my Dad has given me. Happy Fathers Day to all you dads out there!!!

Today is our 16th wedding anniversary! Tony and I have had a lot of adventures together, and we look forward to many more. These are some of the reasons that I fell in love with my sweetheart:

I am so grateful to have a wonderful husband!!!! To celebrate, we are going to the Stake Center and spend the evening housing/registering about 350 youth for our Tri-stake Youth Conference. There's nothing I'd rather do than work along-side my sweetie!!

Weary Woman

I am physically, mentally, and emotionally drained!!! Why do we do this to ourselves??!! I seriously over-scheduled this week, and I'm so glad it's almost over. Here is a summary of things I've done since Monday morning:

Paint (ceilings included) 2 bedrooms(including closet interiors), one bathroom, one large living room, hallway/common area, and a nasty laundry room

Help with 8th grade trip to Missoula for swimming and bowling

Attend 2nd Grade class concert

Have my living room carpet cleaned

Have van carpet and upholstery cleaned

Attend 8th grade graduation ceremony

Chaperone 8th grade dance/party

Bake cookies for husband's work bake sale

Help set up and serve at elementary school barbecue

Paint t-shirts for end-of year celebration with Emily's friends

Help a friend pack and clean her house

Provide each of my kids with a special " graduation" dinner

I am so far behind on laundry, cleaning, yard work, etc... Tomorrow I am going to Spokane with the youth temple trip. I am really looking forward to sitting for the 3 hour drive, and possibly taking a little nap! I am especially looking forward to the peace and calm of the temple!!

A Special Gift - Jacob's Big Day

Last night, we were given a special gift. I have to go back in time to explain.

Fourteen years ago, our first child, Jacob was born. All parents feel that their child is special, but I knew that there was something "extra" about Jacob. When he was 3 years old, he was diagnosed with autism. At that time he threw tantrums, screamed, banged his head, and did not communicate or respond to us. Our hearts were broken... it was as if we had lost our boy.

Last night, Jacob graduated from Middle School. He takes regular classes, and excells in them. He is happy. He is smart, funny, and talented. He definitely has hard times and acts "socially unacceptable". His class is wonderful and supportive.

At the ceremony last night, there was a "slide show" where each student was shown, along with a sentence that told what they want to do during high school. Some pictures got laughs, all got applause. When Jacob's picture came up, the entire 8th grade jumped to their feet, yelling and cheering. I don't think there was a dry eye in the building. I'll never forget the way I felt. I've had tears leaking from my eyes since then.

Autism has brought many tears throughout the years, but last night they were tears of gratitude and love and pride. I'm so thankful for the love and support of our friends and family. I don't know if those kids will ever know how they have touched our family, but the gift they gave to Jacob and our family will never be forgotten!!!

Go Mom, Go!!!

This is a crazy, crazy week! I'll write more about it later. I took a few minutes to water my plants tonite, and saw that my poppies have started to bloom. As I looked closer, one seemed to be smiling at me. It made me smile and lightened my load for a few minutes. Thank heaven for the little blessings!!

Rock of Ages

We spent part of the day busting up these concrete posts along our back alley. (I think we busted a few muscles in the process!) They have probably been there for as long as our house has. (Over 100 years) We got economically stimulated, and plan to spend our "refund" on a new fence. Inside one of the posts, we found an old, crumpled up comic page from a newspaper! Unfortunately it was in very small pieces, and we couldn't find any dates. Luckily, we got the job done just as the handle of the sledgehammer broke!

When I was a little girl, this painting hung in my Granny's guest room. The raspberries and roses have always fascinated me. When Tony and I moved into our first home, Granny gave me the picture so I would have something to hang on my bare walls. I did a crackle finish on the frame, and had a piece of glass cut to fit. ( It had no glass when I received it.) Now it sits on the mantle in my living room, and I have used the colors in it as inspiration for many projects! It is my favorite painting because it is beautiful, and it reminds me that I am loved.

Card Chaos

Today I did NOT wake up and say "I think I will get out all my paper scraps and spend the day making cards". It all started when I looked at my calandar this morning and saw that I have a niece graduating in a few days. Then I remembered 3 or 4 other graduation announcements that are stuck on my bulletin board. I went to get out some cards to send, and realized that I didn't have a single one that would fit for a graduation! ( I keep a bin full of home-made cards). So... I got out the paper, scissors, glue, stickers, ribbon, accessories, etc.... and got to work. Since I had all the supplies out, I decided I might as well make a few extra cards to keep on hand. I'm not a real "froofy" person, so I don't get too fancy with these things. It was fun, but now I need to get to the laundry, cleaning, and other not-so-fun things.

Memorial Day

Today is a cold, wet holiday. We went to the annual Memorial Day parade in Corvallis, and saw a lot of old tractors, and trucks with political candidates trying to look personable. We also went to Grantsdale Cemetary. I don't know anyone buried there, but it is one of my favorite spots! The view is spectacular, and I always feel a sense of peace as I wander among the old headstones. I told Tony that I would like to be buried in this cemetary. He had me write down the phone number to call to buy a plot! Tony is an Idaho boy, but maybe he'll indulge his Montana girl for our final resting spot! I probably won't think about it again until next Memorial Day!

Quilt Crazy

My sister makes a lot of neat quilts. As I was looking at her blog, I found this link http://www.crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/. Right now she is on week 3 of a "star quilt" quilt-a-long. I decided to join in, since the weather is cold and rainy, and I can't be working outside. The picture on the bottom is my inspiration block. It was in a box of "quilt pattern blocks" that was given to me when Tony's grandmother died. ( Her name was Elsie Bodily.) The blues and oranges struck my fancy! So I dug through all my scraps and pulled out the blue and orange pieces for my quilt. I spent the morning making these first 3 blocks, and I'm excited to do the rest! I also like the hand stitching around Grandma Bodily's pieces. I think I'll try that and see how it looks!

Playing with Power Tools

This is a project I made last week. My cat was needing a place to scratch, so I went to the pet store and looked at scratching posts. I thought " I could make one of those!"... so..., I did. The base is part of an old shelf that I kept for putting up in my garage. (Hopefully you'll see my shelf project in a few weeks.) The posts are pieces of a 4x4 fence post that I scrounged from my Dad's back yard. The square platform is another piece of old shelving, and the round platform is an old tabletop that I cut a "peek-hole" in. I covered everything in old carpet pieces that my parents had. ( They keep everthing!) The only piece I bought was the very top, barrel thing. I wrapped the posts with sisal rope, and screwed everything together. It was a fun project, and the cat loves it! I'm just happy he stopped trying to sharpen his claws on my leg!!!

Chocolate Raspberry Jam

This morning I decided it was time to use up last year's raspberries out of the freezer. I don't eat a lot of jam, but my family does. I found this recipe on-line and it was super-easy! What can be better than raspberries and chocolate? I also canned some raspberry pie filling, but haven't tried it out yet. If it is good, I'll post that recipe also.

Chocolate Raspberry Jam

6 cups frozen raspberries, or 7 pints fresh

3 (1 ounce) unsweetened chocolate squares

5 cups sugar

1 box dry pectin

1 tsp. butter

Mix raspberries, pectin, and chocolate in a large pot. Heat on hight until it comes to a rolling boil. Add the sugar all at once. Heat to a boil again and cook for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and process in jars. This made exactly 5 pints.
